Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions (and answers) about AC and DC charging stations for your reference.

What is difference between AC and DC charger?

The difference between AC and DC EV charger is mainly where the conversion from AC to DC happens. AC EV chargers use alternating current from the grid, which has to be firstly converted into DC energy by the onboard converter before it can be stored in the EV battery. And at the meantime, DC EV charger applies direct current from the grid bypassing the EV’s onboard converter and goes directly into the battery. This results in faster charging times for DC EV chargers, but also higher costs and sometimes less availability.

Do I need an AC or DC charger?

The choice between AC & DC EV charger depends on many factors such as your specific needs, preferences, and budget. Here are some questions for you to answer before making your decision:

How often do you need to charge your EV?

AC EV charger may be ideal for you if you charge your car at home or work for most of time, where your car can stay plugged in for hours. If, however, in most cases you want to recharge your EV but you are in a hurry and have only a few minutes to spare, then a DC EV charger might be more suitable for you since it generally charge faster.

How much do you want to spend on your EV charger?

AC EV chargers are usually less expensive than DC EV chargers when it comes to the price, installation and maintenance fees. The reason behind these differences lies in the specialized and expensive components necessary for DC chargers, including transformers, inverters, and cooling systems. These additional components, all together, contribute to the higher price of most DC chargers and can also result in increased electricity bills.
Thus, it is your decision to make, either you want an AC charger at the end of the day or a DC EV charger in your short break. Here at EVB you can choose any of these types of EV chargers depending on your special situation.

How long will it take to fully charge my EV by EVB EV charging products?

The charge time depends on the battery size of your EV, the onboard charger power, and the charging station power. You can estimate it by using this formula: Charge Time = Battery Capacity (kWh) / Charging Power (kW), or you can use this to estimate how much output do you need if you want to fully charge your EV within particular time: Charging Power (kW) = Battery Capacity (kWh) / Charge Time

How much EV charging station power do I need?

It depends on how fast you want to charge your electric car and your EV’s onboard charger power. For example, if your car has an 11kW onboard charger doesn’t need a 22kW station, which is more expensive in most cases, since charging speed won’t increase the onboard charger power.

What to do if I have limited power supply for EV chargers?

Do I need an upgrade? Not necessarily. EVB DLB (Dynamic Load Balance) will analyze your energy use and allocates surplus power to the EV station, allowing day and night charging without a power increase or drop.

What types of ev charging stations should I get?

Aspects you need to take into consideration before deciding include: do you want a wall mounting or pedestal, cable or hardwire, smart or basic features, your preferences and budget, and EV compatibility. Think about these aspects before you make final decision and feel free to ask our professional support team for any question.
